About NDTA approved Certificate Courses

The NDTATM Contemporary Practice Model Certificate Course in the Management and Treatment of Children with Cerebral Palsy and other Neuromotor Disorders utilizes principles of motor development, motor control, motor learning, and other supporting current scientific research, to address functional goals of children with Cerebral Palsy and other neuromotor disorders. Instruction involves a mix of lectures, audiovisual presentations, demonstration treatments, movement labs and treatment practicums with children while getting individualised feedback from the instructors.

What is the NDTATM Contemporary Practice Model?
The child’s individuality is considered the central focus of NDTATM Contemporary Practice Model.
The NDTATM Contemporary Practice Model for children with CNS pathophysiologies addresses specific task related posture and movement issues in aiming for the children’s highest functional participation in their individual and family chosen daily skills.

The NDTATM Contemporary Practice Model

Is an advanced 'hands-on' therapeutic approach for children, which utilises principles of motor development, motor control, motor learning, and other supporting current scientific research, to address functional goals of children with Cerebral Palsy and other neuromotor disorders.
Is family centred, built on children’s functional strengths, and cognisant of daily function related to participation in life.
Engages children’s motivation through playful intervention and includes both ‘hands on’ physical guidance strategies, and verbal cues and feedback, gradually changed and withdrawn according to the needs and emerging skills of the child.

NDTATM Contemporary Practice Model Intervention includes:

Examination, evaluation, and intervention, grounded in an on-going process of clinical problem-solving to consider both the strengths and limitations of the individual.
Task Analysis: NDT clinicians analyze each person’s functional activities and limitations by observing the task related postures and movements that support and limit these functions, and by hypothesizing their relationships to underlying system integrities and impairments.
‘Systems Theory’ is employed to evaluate the underlying reasons why an individual moves the way s/he does.  The Musculoskeletal, Neuromuscular, Sensory, Respiratory and other systems of the body - and the task related environmental demands - are examined in detail. Task specific strengths, impairments and components are identified and specifically addressed, in intervention, towards improving the child's task/function.
Each treatment session is based on functional outcomes, and has specific functional goals which are pre and post - tested within each treatment session, and which guide the intervention.  Treatment session goals are directly related to the components needed in the child’s short and long term goals.

Course instruction for therapists includes:
A step-by-step analysis to help the therapist prioritize & determine where to start, & how to plan & carry out effective treatments.
 • Specific individual feedback given to therapists, designed to advance their skills.  This is done through verbal and written communication. Templates are used to show each participant his/her progress.  Mid-term meetings with instructors are held, along with any other requested discussion time.
An adult-learning, open and supportive atmosphere.

Our previous courses have been held in Geelong (2009), Brisbane/Melbourne (2011), Hobart & Gold Coast (2013) and SCU Gold Coast/North Lakes (2019). One of our participants wrote an article about her experience of the course for the NDTA Network.
